NORMAN — Quarterback Rhett Bomar ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead Oklahoma past Kansas State, 43-21, in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.
Picking up the slack for running back Adrian Peterson, who suffered a game-ending ankle injury in the second quarter, the rest of OU’s backfield accounted for 181 yards, including a game- and career-best 67 from Bomar. The redshirt-freshman put the Sooners on top 27-0 early in the third quarter with a nifty 8-yard run.
Kejuan Jones had touchdown runs of three and two yards for the Sooners, who improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. It was OU’s sixth straight conference-opening win. K-State felll to 3-1 overall and 0-1.
Peterson, the sophomore star who finished second in the Heisman race last season, rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown before exiting with his injury. His 22-yard scoring run with 5:29 left in the opening quarter gave OU a 7-0 lead it would never relinquish.
“It was a good win,” said OU coach Bob Stoops. “It’s great to get started in Big 12 Conference play with a win. Felt like we made good progress throughout the week as a team, and it reflected in the way we played tonight.”
Peterson returned to the sidelines in the second half, but did not play.
“He should be OK. He could have played in the second half if we chose to. He had somewhat of an ankle injury,” noted Stoops.
The Sooners hope Peterson will be back at full strength when they travel to Dallas next weekend to fact second-ranked Texas. Last season, Peterson rushed for 225 rushing yards to help the Sooners post their fifth straight win the series, 12-0.
Overall, the Sooners rolled up 232 yards on the ground and held the mistake-prone Wildcats to only 22.
Jones scored on a 3-yard run to give Oklahoma a 19-0 halftime lead, and the Sooners built on it with help from numerous mistakes by Kansas State (3-1, 0-1).
Freshman Reggie Smith's first career interception set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Bomar on the Sooners' first possession of the second half.
"We got our fannies waxed," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. "We've just been doing all the things that can hurt us."
Jordy Nelson scored on a 73-yard reception, and Rashaad Norwood had an 11-yard TD catch for Kansas State, which was trying to match its win total from last season. Ayo Saba added a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Bomar had his first career touchdown pass on a 4-yard toss to Joe Jon Finley in the fourth quarter and finished with 139 yards on 12-for-22 passing and 67 yards on eight carries.
Allen Webb threw for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Kansas State.
