NORMAN — Seventh-ranked Oklahoma proved to be a generous host Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Sooners coughed up four turnovers, including a fumble that led to the decisive score in the final quarter, as Texas Christian walked away with a stunning 17-10 victory.
Coming in as 25-point underdogs, the Horned Frongs produced their biggest upset almost a half century.
Besides forcing the Sooners into critical mistakes, TCU's defensive did a nice job of shutting down All-America running back Adrian Peterson, who finished with just 63 yards on 22 carries.
TCU quarterback Tye Gunn led the Frogs' attack with 226 passing yards and a touchdown, helping his squad hand OU it first home loss since Oklahoma State beat the Sooners in 2001.
Robert Merrill's short TD run with 11:56 remaining was set up by Rhett Bomar on a sack play.
Oklahoma, which finished with only 14 first downs and 225 yards of offense, had several chances to answer in the closing moments, but starting QB Paul Thompson could not rally his team.
TCU's last win over a highly ranked team came on Oct. 29, 1960, when it knocked off No. 7 Baylor.
