NEW YORK — Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was named the 74th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy at the 2008 ceremony tonight presented by the New York City Downtown Athletic Club.
Bradford, who thanked his teammates, coaches, family and friends in an emotional acceptance speech, finished with 1,726 votes, compared to 1,604 for runner-up Colt McCoy of Texas and 1,575 for 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow of Florida.
Bradford has thrown for 48 touchdowns and 4,400 yards as a redshirt-sophomore, while leading the Sooners to the BCS Championship Game against Florida on Jan. 8. Oklahoma produced the highest-scoring offense in major college football history.
A year after Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman, Bradford became the second and kept the Florida quarterback from joining Archie Griffin as the only two-time winners.
Bradford became the fifth Sooner to win the award joining Jason White (2004), Billy Sims (1978), Steve Owens (1969) and Billy Vessels (1952). The Oklahoma City native and Putnam City North production earned the Davey O'Brien Award Friday night and was voted first-team All-America earlier this week.
Bradford completed 302 of his 442 passes for school record 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He led the nation in passing efficiency and also scored five rushing touchdowns on the year.
Note only has Bradford already shattered Jason White's school record for touchdowns in a season (48) and a career (84), he has surpassed Florida's Rex Grossman with most touchdowns through the freshman and sophomore year (82).
The Heisman Trophy is awarded each year to the most outstanding college football player in the United States as determined by 870 media representatives, 55 living Heisman winners and one fan vote. Bradford received 1,726 points. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was second with 1,604 and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was third with 1,575 points.
