Sophomore safety Nic Harris expects to see a lot of action this season in the Oklahoma secondary. Sooner Spectator caught up with him after practice Tuesday to talk about his world...
Sooner Spectator: If you could have any attribute of one of your teammate’s, what would it be?
Nic Harris: I would want the knowledge of Rufus (Alexander). He’s a great leader out there on the field, knowing exactly where everyone is supposed to be. He helps me out a lot, knowing that I’m young and willing to learn, and helps push me to become a better player. He is great at being able to read an offense, and letting the other guys know what’s coming.
SS: As a football player, what is your biggest inspiration?
Harris: I would say my grandparents. They have been tremendous influences in my life. Every time I go out on the football field, I want to make them proud and play to the very best of my ability.
SS: Do you have any pre-game rituals or a certain meal you normally eat before a game?
Harris: No, I don’t do any of those things. They aren’t for me. I don’t think stuff like that is going to make you a better player. I have my bible, and I read a little before a game and get myself ready to play. I like to be mentally strong before a game, and that gets me ready.
SS: What are your thoughts on how you played against Alabama-Birmingham?
NH: I could have played better, but I think that’s expected from the first game. I recognize mistakes and other plays that could have been made, and make adjustments to get better. I’m learning a new position, so I’ll get better. I’m learning all of this on the fly, and it’s been a little hectic. But once I settle in learn everything, I’ll be fine.
SS: What do you feel needs improvement?
Harris: Being more prepared and getting more physical with guys. If you get more physical with opponents, they begin to think about making the catch, or crossing the middle. And once you start making them think, you’re doing a good job. It gets them out of their game. They aren’t reacting, instead they are wasting time thinking about what to do or where to go. As far as being more prepared, I just feel that if I better prepare myself, I’m going to be that much better once I get in the game. It’s going to make my job easier, and my teammates’ job easier as well.
